Penguin Facts
There are 17 species of penguins, all of which are found in the Southern Hemisphere, with most living on the coasts of Antartica and subantarctic islands.
Penguins distinctive markings of a white underside and dark upper-side are camouflage against predators such as leopard seals – looking up against the light of the sky and down at the murkier depths.
Penquin Paradise preserved – After campaigning by WWF the South African government has created a new protected area, roughly 9 times the size of Wales covering Prince Edward and Marion Island (2000 km/1,250 mi. south of South Africa). This has provided a safe breeding ground for over 1 million penguins, including King and Gentoo penguins and the vulnerable Rockhopper and Macaroni species
